The real problem of humanity is the following: we have Palaeolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology.
– E. O. Wilson
AI and other technologies are rapidly evolving, outpacing our institutions’ abilities to address risks and opportunities. We need to adapt these “medieval” structures to our “god-like” technology.
Could AI itself be used to imagine and build new institutions, so we can better collaborate, govern, and live together?
The inaugural AI for Institutions workshop took place in Oxford in April 2023, organised by the Collective Intelligence Project and the Cooperative AI Foundation. We hope to inspire and engage researchers and practitioners to build AI that improves our societal institutions.
On the website you can find details of past and upcoming workshops, as well as “Project Cards” that showcase ideas for projects that have come out of our workshops and the people who have attended them. We encourage you to take a project card and run with it, browse for inspiration, or submit one.
If you would like to add a project card, tell us about your progress on a related idea, or host a workshop on AI for Institutions (e.g., at an AI conference), please get in touch with us via the contact form. We are actively looking to support people interested in working in this area, including the potential for funding, mentorship, or collaboration.
